Our Associates Biographies Andrew Buchanan A business consultant specializing in corporate security issues, mainly in Africa. Andrew qualified as a teacher before graduating from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. Following service in the British Army and a period in commerce, Andrew entered the security industry, managing a guarding operation in the UK. He subsequently took up a series of senior security appointments in Africa, working in the diamond mining industries of Sierra Leone, Zaire (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Angola. He joined BAT with a global security management remit, and continued to develop his Sub-Saharan African responsibilities as Regional Security Manager for Africa. He is a French speaker
with extensive travel experience and intimate knowledge of most Sub-Saharan
African countries. Geoffrey Gillion An independent consultant with extensive experience in security and intelligence both in military and commercial sectors. Geoffrey also advises on business continuity, benchmarking and reduction in counterfeit trading. He designs and runs training in surveillance awareness and personal protection. He specializes in counter-terrorist issues and is trained in hostage negotiation. Following a career as an officer in the British Armys Intelligence Corps, Geoffrey was employed with a London-based multi-national company as a senior security manager. He has been heavily involved in the study and successful prevention of counterfeit goods entering and transiting international markets. He spent two years in West Africa acting to reduce the levels of counterfeit goods in circulation. His work achieved a two thirds reduction in these levels by volume in a specific niche market. He has recently worked
closely with oil-related industries and with Government Departments and
training organizations in the United Kingdom, Europe and the Middle East
as a senior consultant.
Robert H Pepper A business consultant who worked firstly as a regional security manager and then as the Chief Security Officer of Bechtel, the major US Corporation, with worldwide operations. Prior to these appointments, Robert served in both infantry and intelligence services within the British Army. He is fluent in German. Robert has provided comprehensive strategic guidance, support, and advice, as well as physical, analytical, and technical security services to worldwide worksites and offices. His expertise embraces
crisis management planning and co-ordination, and the management of country

M Anwar Khan In his first career in the Pakistan Army, Anwar served with distinction and, having reached the rank of Colonel, retired in 1994. A graduate from Command and Staff College, Quetta, he also holds a masters degree in Political Science. Having held three various operational, management and security appointments, he joined Pakistan Tobacco Company (PTC) - a subsidiary of British American Tobacco (BAT), the worlds 2nd largest tobacco group). Anwar was the CSO of PTC for 11 years until his retirement in 2006. In addition, he has attended various advanced international programmes in the USA and the UK related to corporate security and information/ IT security. While managing company
business and operational security interests, Anwar developed effective
and innovative contingency plans to identify and counter numerous threats
like terrorism, various crisis situations and safety & security of
the business in a high risk country like Pakistan, particularly following
9/11 events. He created and disseminated best operating practices, and
coordinated and managed security activities of the whole company. He also
has extensive experience in risk assessment - as risk manager - security

and conduct of security awareness programmes in the company. Tony Judge Tony served 23 years with the British Army, 17 of those years in the Intelligence Corps. After his military career, He joined British American Tobacco (China,) part of the world’s second largest tobacco company as CSO and was also engaged as CSO for British American Tobacco (BAT) South East Europe. Tony's broad experience of security operations in Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia and other CIS countries, China and other countries in the Far East, Australia and Brasil, and of working with teams from widely differing environments, coupled with a flair for foreign languages, enables him to bring cultural sensitivity to his assignments and tailor his approach to working with colleagues from widely differing backgrounds. Tony is knowledgeable in all areas of business security and in the integration of all types of security measures into general business policy and practice to ensure, as far as is possible, effective corporate security with the minimum of added friction to business operations. In China he was responsible for planning security for a major green-field operation which included production, distribution and sales operations. Tony’s commercial security experience includes security surveys, audits and inspections and security policy development; Risk Management, including Risk Assessments, Emergency, Disaster Recovery, and Business Continuity planning and policy development, Information and IT security planning and policy development, and production, operations and logistics security, and associated training. He was a member of the Crisis Management Team in BAT China during the SARS crisis. Tony is also well-versed in anti-counterfeit and anti-illicit trading operations in Europe and Asia. He has supervised the installation of physical and IT security equipment and systems, developed and implemented new policies and procedures and trained and educated (non-technical,) staff in the use of the new systems. Usually, Tony is attached to the company concerned for periods varying from one week to 6 months. Alvaro Daniel Medina Alvaro Medina started his security experience in the Colombian Army with over 30 years of management and leadership. Achieving the rank of Colonel, he received national and international recognitions with eighteen medals for distinguished services in the Colombian Army, from the Governments of France, Ecuador, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina. He developed and led military operations as a Brigade Commander in high risk areas in Colombia. He graduated in high military studies in the ESGI in Paris and in the Continental Defense Course at the Inter-American Defense College in Washington. He retired from the Army in 1990 and joined Avianca, the first airline in Colombia as CSO responsible for the whole security operation in Colombia and foreign travel destinations in other countries. In 1993, he was asked to return to the Army as a military strategy teacher in the Escuela Superior de Guerra (War College) for one and a half years, following which he was designated as Security Manager for British American Tobacco Colombia. In his ten years with BAT, Alvaro was recognized for creating a world class security culture and developing and implementing effective plans and measures to build a security environment against threats such as terrorism, kidnapping and other high risks associated with Colombia. Roberto Mackrodt Born in São Paulo, Brazil on 11 June 1949, graduated as Officer - Pilot from the Brazilian Air Force Academy in 1971. Besides the usual career courses, he attended other relevant specialist programs such as the Aircraft Accident Investigation and Prevention from the Brazilian Air Force and from the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States. Amongst several duties, ran security and intelligence activities. As a pilot, was selected to be one of the captains of the presidential fleet for five years. Also performed as a civil aviation in-flight inspector. Retired as a colonel after 28 years of military service. Before retiring also received a degree in Administration. Hired by one of the biggest elevator companies in Brazil, was in charge of implementing the function of Controller and designated Head of Audit. In January 1997 joined Souza Cruz, the biggest tobacco company in Latin America as Head of Security based in Rio de Janeiro. Later that year was appointed, on a dual role, as regional security manager for British American Tobacco in the Latin America & Caribbean region. During the time with BAT attended several internal and external courses mainly on security, crisis management workshops and delivered training for staff around the region. Retired August 2006 and established a business delivering consultancy on security. Is an ASIS member and Life-member of ISMA, both international security associations. Speaks Portuguese, English and German, and has considerable knowledge of Spanish and basic French. Deepak Summanwar Deepak Summanwar recently retired from the Indian Army after thirty nine years of service. He has had varied experience as Director General Military Intelligence, Additional Director General Perspective Planning, and Additional Director General Public Information. He has over twenty years of combat experience in the frontline and counter insurgency environment. He has been decorated for gallantry and distinguished service five times. He has been awarded the Uttam Yudh Seva medal,and the Ati Vishisht Seva medal. He has been awarded twenty medals during his service. Deepak is a graduate of the National Defense Academy, Defense Services Staff College and the Army War College. He has schooled at the Doon School Dehradun and has a post graduate degree in Defense Studies from the University of Madras. He has a Masters in Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing and Finance from the Vrije University, Brussels and the Solvay Business School. He has also completed the All India Management Associations Strategic Management course and the Federation of Indian Industries program for independent directors. Until September 2006 he was the Global Loss Prevention and Security Director for the UK retail giant Tesco plc, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer. His responsibilities included theworldwide protection of all company assets, Crisis Management and Business Continuity. Prior to joining Tesco in May 1998 Mr Purnell spent 35 years as a serving police office in the London Metropolitan Police. He retired with the rank of Deputy Assistant Commissioner commanding cc 8,000 operational officers in North-West London. During his career he served in all ranks throughout London, investigating a wide cross section of crime and commanding terrorist bomb scenes, civil disasters, violent public demonstrations, and ceremonial events. Gennady is a highly experienced and exceptionally effective corporate security manager and corporate security consultant who speaks fluent English. Following a successful career as an officer in the Intelligence Service (Soviet Union/Russia) Gennady joined British American Tobacco Russia – a subsidiary of British American Tobacco (BAT), the world’s second largest tobacco group. He was the head of security for BAT Russia for 11 years until his retirement in 2006. In addition Gennady provided security assistance and support to BAT companies in CIS countries. He has extensive experience in risk assessment and threat analysis, physical/technical security, security of nation wide supply chain, conducting security awareness programmes in companies and is well versed in managing critical incidents. In 1986 he participated in the series of International Maritime Organisation Meetings, which resulted in the unanimous adoption by the United Nations of the Policy Document - ‘Measures to Prevent Unlawful Acts Against Passengers and Crews On Board Ships’ (MSC/Circ.443). Brigadier Parritt has also been an invited speaker at five Seminars organised by the IMO, three to discuss Maritime Terrorism matters and two to discuss Piracy/Armed Robbery issues. These were 1989, Puerto Rico, 1990, Greece, 1991, Japan, 1998, Brazil and 1999 in Singapore. In 2002 he was appointed by the IMO to be the "Maritime Security Consultant” and has participated in IMO training workshops in Mombasa, Singapore, Sydney, Alexandria and Gdansk. In 2003 he was asked to revise the week long IMO Maritime Security Seminar/Workshop Manual and has conducted this revised training in Calabar (Nigeria), Durban, Mumbai, Bangkok and Peking. In 1989 he was part of a Delegation led by the Norwegian Ambassador, which toured the Caribbean to discuss with Heads of State how to prevent the smuggling of illegal items. In 1991 he was asked by the Nautical Institute to write the book "Security at Sea" which is a practical guide for Masters to help them deal with terrorism, drugs and piracy. This book includes a Foreword written by the Secretary General of the IMO. Following the success of this book, in 1992 the Nautical Institute commissioned him to write a second book, "Stowaways at Sea". This dealt with the problems arising from Stowaways, Refugees and Asylum Seekers. In 1996 a third Book was commissioned entitled "Crime at Sea" to help mitigate the effect of Maritime Crime, and in 1998 a new Book was published entitled "Illegal Drugs by Sea". In 1994 he was elected a Companion of the Nautical Institute, and in 1995 was a joint signatory with Her Majesty's Customs and Excise to a "Memorandum of Understanding" in the fight against illegal drugs. In 1999 he was selected to be a Governor of the United States Maritime Security Committee in Washington and to be a Member of the Association of Airport and Seaport Police.
• Secure Leadership Selector In 2001, he was elected, by the UK membership, to the global Council of the Information Security Forum (ISF) and was elected by that council of his peers to the ISF Executive a year later. He was a member of the ISF Ltd Board of Directors that led strategic business change in the ISF which resulted in renewed membership growth year on year. He was also a member of the ISF Board finance sub-group. His responsibilities with the ISF continued until December 2007. As an information security specialist he developed various in-house training programmes for business staff that have been delivered worldwide including a 5-day specialist workshop for security managers. He has presented at numerous conferences, was a referee of the EU CTOSE project and has worked with national and international manufacturers’ associations. A corporate security expert who has operated across the Globe for a major multinational company, following on from 30 years as a senior detective with the Metropolitan Police Service (New Scotland Yard). Laurie joined the Met in 1968 moving at an early stage from general policing both in uniform and as a detective, through anti terrorism, drugs and organised crime, kidnap, ransom and extortion investigations and hostage negotiating. With the latter responsibility, he worked for the UK Government on kidnap resolutions overseas. He joined BAT in 1998 having a global security remit before assuming the role of Regional Security Manager for Africa and the Middle East and then for 5 years from 2002, with the same role in the Company’s Asia Pacific Region and being based in Hong Kong. In addition to the expected responsibilities, Laurie played a key part in the development and implementation of BAT’s anti illicit trade strategy. Keith Muras Beginning his career life as a professional economist in industry, after 8 years Keith moved from the rigours of economic analysis to join the British Diplomatic Service. In a distinguished career spanning 23 years, Keith worked in South Africa, the former Soviet Union, Jamaica (with responsibilities extending throughout the Western Caribbean), Zimbabwe, and Uganda. His focus was on international strategic political security and economic issues. Keith also spent time in the UK, seconded to the Ministry of Defence, assisting and advising on domestic and international terrorist threats. Louis Alexander Louis is a life-long security professional. From Pennsylvania, he graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in Criminal Justice, and took a Master’s degree in Law and Special Studies at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He entered the US Airforce, working in airbase and missile security, at home and internationally. He then joined the US Secret Service, with almost 25 years service. He topped out this service with international assignments out of Europe in such commercial enterprises as Monsanto and Pharmacia, and then with Abbott Laboratories. He joined Philip Morris International as head of global security, operating in over 160 countries out of their global base in Lausanne, Switzerland. A member of ISMA, he has also made significant contributions to the Interpol led Global Congress Combating Counterfeit, Contraband, and Piracy. He is also a member of OSAC, and maintains an interest in several other professional security organisations.. |
